The sowing date varies according to the variety and the altitude of the geographical area where it is planted.

Characteristics required during the industrial hemp establishment phase :

  • Temperature of 12°C (range 0-10cm)
  • Press the bottom of the seedbed together to ensure that the seeder works evenly.
  • Crumble the first 3 to 7 cm to obtain good seed-soil contact (high porosity, with small-sized aggregates. However, at least 40% of the aggregates must be larger than the seed to avoid erosion such as capping).
  • Plot free of foreign bodies on its surface
  • Drained plot
  • Levelled plot

Be careful with sowing depth: 1 cm is ideal. Hemp does not have high emergence force. That’s why we recommend a depth of no more than 1 cm (Caution: Battance crust) => Limiting structure. Avoid planting hemp before heavy rainfall (risk of threshing on silty soils and seed leaching).

Fertilisation

Industrial hemp is not a crop that requires more NPK and trace elements than a cereal, but rather an intermediate crop.

Hemp is a crop with the following requirements:

  • 80 units of nitrogen in the form of 1846 + ammo or liquid nitrogen
  • (A hemp crop may require a total of 120 U of nitrogen and a restitution of about 40 U N, here there is a restitution with the cover crop)
  • 80 phosphorus units
  • 120 units of potash (Beware of deficiencies)
  • Magnesia: 100 U minimum
  • Sulphur: 60-70 U minimum (Gispe 300 kg/Ha and at sowing with 1.5 T of poultry droppings).

Note: After the first 80-100 days of the hemp cycle, it should be fully absorbed.

Soil structure conducive to soil development: fragmentary, lumpy structure. The texture most compatible with industrial hemp cultivation is silt (beware of threshing).

If high reliquat (previous grassland, green manure application, excessive fertilization)=>Hemp lodging risk, which is higher depending on variety (Fibror 49) and climatic conditions. If lodged, fiber quality is degraded, general degradation of the plant when in contact with the soil + impossibility of harvesting seed.

Development stages

It is therefore very important to check the settings of your seed drill to obtain a depth of one centimetre and no more.

5 days after sowing, lines should be visible. It’s at this stage that we notice a major pigeon attack.

3 weeks after sowing, hemp covers and smothers weeds
